A KNOCK-OUT chess competition with a shield provided by Ryde manufacturers Neutrik — last played remotely during Covid — has been won by the same man.

Michael Gidley retained the title he last won in 2021.

The competition, organised by the Isle of Wight Chess Club, was played at various venues across the Island.

Playing over a board and sat opposite an opponent, rather than it being online, saw a greater uplift in the quality of the games.

"I won the this competition the last time it was held in 2021, but it was affected by Covid, with all the games being remote, via computer," said Michael.

"I had a number of challenging opponents, but managed to win through.

"The final was a three-player round-robin, and I won one and drew one, which was enough to win.

"Most of my games were played at Sandown. Competitive games are played against the clock. For this competition, the time limit varied between 20 and 40 minutes.

"I would recommend any new or experienced players come to one of the clubs. There will be a warm welcome."

Regular chess clubs are held at the following venues:

  • Monday — Ryde Tennis Club (11am-12.30pm).
  • Tuesday — Shanklin Age Concern Cafe (12pm-2pm)
  • Thursday — Sandown Conservative Club (7pm-9pm); Brading Community Centre (10am-1pm).
