A main Isle of Wight road has been closed this morning (Sunday, April 28) following a significant landslip which has blocked both lanes of the carriageway.

UPDATE: Local farmer clears landslip blocking major Island route

A section of embankment on Niton Road, just outside Rookley, has seen major slippage onto the road.

Teams from Island Roads have made the decision to close the road with immediate effect.

Niton Road has been closed from its junctions with Harts Lane and the Chequers Inn pub.

Patrons of the Chequers Inn, who travel from north of the landslip, will be able to access the business by diverting via Rookley Main Road and Chequers Inn Road.

Earlier this year, further south on the route (Newport Road), there was also slippage which saw Island Roads launch an investigation.

In November last year, major movement saw 200 tonnes of debris block Shorwell Shute, leaving the road closed for weeks.
