CRICKET FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Matt Webb was the star bowler for Newport, taking five wickets to help them to victory against Northwood.

Newport’swin meant they swapped places with Northwoodin Division 1 of the Harwoods Renault IW League, thanks to Webb’s heroics and the batting prowess of Andy Long and Tom Dye.

Webb’s 5-7 helped restrict Northwood to 70 all out, which was comfortably chased down by Dye (40 not out) and Long (33 not out).

A massive run total helped Shanklin to a memorable victory against table toppers St Helens.

A brilliant 121 for James Lucy, plus 57 for Chris Lammiman and 38 for Michael Dignan helped Shanklin to 328-5, before they bowled St Helens out for 162.

Notable scorers for St Helens were Mark Watson (73) and Marc Allen (38).

GKN won their first match of the season with a 106-run victory against Ventnor III.

Ben Wadmore reached his half century, while Liam Ringer (49 not out) and Bjorn Coysh (34) made significant contributions for GKN, as they reached 225-7.

In response, Barney Tyler hit 56 before he was run out.

In Division 2, Bembridge maintained their lead at the top with a victory against Arreton.

Owain Hooper was the pick of the Bembridge players, hitting 59 runs, to help them reach 186 all out.

Arreton were restricted to 142 all out, with Chris Wray taking four wickets. Tom Unsworth hit 55 for Arreton but it proved in vain.

Just three runs separated Godshill and Northwood II, with the former taking the spoils.

John Turner (70 not out) and Steve Thorne (57 not out) chased down Northwood II’s 147-8 with ease. Pete Conway took two wickets for Godshill.

In the pick of the friendlies, Ash Goldsmith was 120 not out for Northwood in their 56-run victory against Upottery, during the club’s tour of the West Country.
