LETTERS From Jill Hodgson, Niton, jillianhodgson@btinternet.com:The Island’s smallest community library, the Edward Edwards Library in Niton, is celebrating its first year of being run by volunteers.Over the last 12 months, the library has gone from strength to strength, with a band of volunteers manning the busy public sessions and others committed to the fundraising essential to keeping the service to the community going.We have had fantastic support from the library users and the community at large but we do believe there are sources of financial support out there we have, as yet, been unable to discover or make use of.We are hoping there might be someone with experience of applying for funding from public and charitable donors and who would be willing to work with our treasurer and fundraising committee on a voluntary basis. We need someone who has some knowledge of what sort of funding is available and how small community projects like ours might be able to apply for finance.The library team also has a very special event on the horizon. In December, it will be the 200th anniversary of the birth of Edward Edwards, the Victorian who founded the municipal library movement and who is buried in Niton churchyard. We renamed the library after him and we want to celebrate the anniversary in December with a founder’s day.Mr Edwards, sadly, was not a much pictured member of society and our research so far has failed to turn up any photograph or portrait of him. If any reader has ever come across a picture of him, we would love to see it.
