BOTH Newport and Cowes Sports enjoyed comfortable Sydenhams Wessex League victories today (Saturday), after a three-week lay-off from action.

The two sides last played on December 15, but any rustiness from the break and from the Christmas excesses were soon forgotten, as Newport defeated Moneyfields in the Premier Division, while Division 1 leaders Cowes dispatched Amesbury Town 3-0.
At St George's Park, both Newport goals came in the first half, courtesy of a good header from Tom McInnes and a screamer just before the break from John McKie.
At Cowes, Lee Davies gave the Yachtsmen a first-half lead, before strikes in the second half from Tom Dye and Dom Burbidge sealed another three points.
In the Wyvern Combination League, East Cowes Vics Reserves thrashed Downton 7-1, while Newport's trip to US Portsmouth was postponed.
