FOOTBALLCowes Sports 2, Whitchurch 1

TWO goals in the opening 25 minutes earned Cowes Sports victory over Whitchurch United in Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League last weekend.

The hosts enjoyed a dream start when they were awarded a penalty just 40 seconds in, after Dom Burbidge was fouled in the box.

Darren WILLIAMS converted.

Cowes enjoyed a good spell of pressure and it was ten minutes before home keeper Joe Winchcombe was called into action, turning a Paul Coventry shot round the post.

A second goal came 25 minutes later, when Tom Dye’s free kick cleared everybody and was turned in by the unmarked WILLIAMS at the far post.

Cowes continued to dominate and their good form and chances continued well into the second half, with Williams, Burbidge and Charlie Allen all having great chances.

A hail storm caused a brief break in play, and when the game resumed, Whitchurch began to take control and with five minutes remaining, narrowed the gap with a header.

A tense final few minutes were ensured when, after earlier being booked for a harsh handball, Patrick Wilson was sent off for a second bookable offence. But Cowes held out and took all three points.

Cowes Sports: Winchcombe, Draper, Perfect, Bryan, Wilson, Brett, Insley, Dye, Burbidge, Williams, Bricknell. Subs: Allen, Appell, Ince.
