LETTERS From Alan Bennett, Northwood:
NOW the successful drainage upgrades to the Military Road past Compton have been completed, is it not time to complete this section and remove the traffic lights?
It would be simple to reinforce the edge of the road on the sea side with, say, interlocking steel pile sheets and then backfill it with drainage incorporated and create additional roadside parking on the resulting top space, thus negating the need for the annoying traffic lights that spoil the drive along this iconic route.
There are schools of thought that think the lights are seen by the IW Council as a calming influence, to perhaps prevent the motor-biking community from staging unofficial races from Blackgang to Freshwater Bay and back.
As an engineer, I can see no obstacles to removing this bottleneck on the route of a road through an area of outstanding natural beauty and an asset to our Island.
