LETTERS From Dennis Russell, Ventnor:

MR Couter deplores widespread deterioration in spelling. Indeed, in a neighbouring letter on the same page, a curious "inexplorable" appears.

I recently had to point out to the IW Council that one of their prominent website headings used "effect" when they meant "affect".

A common error also (yes, on shop signs too) is the use of an apostrophe to denore a plural (as in "these spelling’s are dreadful"). I attribute some of the deterioration to the rise of texting.

However, nobody’s perfect, and I was amused to see that, at one place in his letter, Mr Couter writes "your" when he should have written "you’re".
