Problems of big bike events

LETTERSFrom Ian Halliday, Ventnor:

AS sponsors of some of the recent cycling events taking place around the Island, could you please ask the organisers to remind the participants that they are bound to follow the laws of the road and rules in the Highway Code.

Many of them were two or three abreast across the road, riding 30-plus in a line, with no breaks for cars to overtake, not stopping to give way at junctions, or stopping at red lights.

I have no objection to them enjoying a ride but rules are rules and when one of the cyclists was asked by a driver if they were supposed to ride three abreast, the cyclist replied, "we can do what we want and police do nothing", which I must say seems to be the case.

It must lie with the organisers to re-inforce their obligation to follow the rules. If everybody tows the line no-one gets hurt. Drivers always get the blame.
