LETTERS From Adrian John, Royal Mencap, Rustington:
I RECENTLY took a group of people with profound and multiple learning difficulties for a day out from Worthing to the IW. As two of our group are permanent wheelchair users, they require special facilities for personal hygiene and toileting support.
We were not sure as to whether this trip was feasible owing to their special needs but were pleased to find that listed on www.changing-places.org/ was the Riverside Centre, in Newport, which provided a full disabled facility complete with changing bed and tracking hoist.
This facility made the whole trip possible and our group had a thoroughly enjoyable day exploring the Island and visiting several of the attractions.
The staff at the Riverside are very helpful and supportive and the facilities are excellent. The Riverside Centre is the only facility of this nature listed for the IW. It is a vital support service for visitors to the Island with these special needs and without it, it simply would not be possible for groups such as ours to enjoy a day trip to a great island.
