Strange standards over plan

LETTERSFrom Don Prescott, Ventnor:

I HAVE been watching with interest the opposition to the proposal to build 33 homes, ten of which would be affordable for Island people, on land at the rear of 44 Worsley Road, Gurnard.

One of the main opponents is the chief executive of Ecoisland and local resident, David Green.

Mr Green is outraged at the proposal, saying in his extensive objection such things as: "I am not a NIMBY but I do believe that the Planners need to show some 'sensitivity’ to the quality for the natural environment and protect what they can of the landscape and wildlife for future generations." and "We have a rich diversity of flora and fauna, we should try to PLACE MORE EMPHASIS on the IMPORTANCE OF OUR NATURAL HERITAGE(Mr Green’s capitals) and less on the financial imperatives of the developers."

Yet the very same Mr Green, along with a half dozen eco-warriors, exhorts the residents of Wellow, Shalfleet, Ventnor, Shorwell and Noke Common to have wind turbines built on their doorstep, which will devastate their natural environment and natural heritage, making millions of pounds in subsidies for the developers, which seems to be 100 per cent at odds with his views on John Parker’s proposal.

I have asked Mr Parker to consider withdrawing his application and to submit one for three 125-metre wind turbines on the site. The loss of the houses would more than be offset by an income of £250,000 plus per annum for 25 years in subsidies and payments, making Mr Parker a very rich man, Gurnard the green capital of Eco island and everyone would be happy.
