ACTOR Julian Wadham, who has appeared in top films and TV series, is to open this year’s Calbourne Fete.

Julian, whose big screen credits include The English Patient, War Horse and The Iron Lady, and who has also appeared in ITV’s critically acclaimed period drama Downton Abbey, will open the fete on June 2.

The fete is just one of a series of community events planned to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the village.

The Calbourne Jubilee Festival will kick off on Friday, June 1, with a car boot sale on the recreation ground from 5pm.

The festivities continue on the Saturday with the village fete and then, on the Sunday, a cream tea dance from 3pm until 5pm and a Right Royal Gig from 7pm until midnight.

The event will be held in a marquee on the recreation ground and will feature a licensed bar.

An antiques fair will be held on Monday, June 4, between 10am and 5pm, again on the recreation ground, while jubilee day itself will be marked with a traditional street party in the driveway of Westover House.

The celebrations have been arranged by a small committee from the village and all the proceeds will go to Calbourne Recreation Centre and All Saints’ Church, Calbourne.

A raffle will be held over the course of the jubilee weekend with top prizes, including a weekend’s stay at the Orchards Holiday Park, Newbridge, a children’s bike donated by Wight Mountain, dinner at the Sun Inn and family days out at the IW Steam Railway and Robin Hill up for grabs.

Raffle tickets, as well as tickets for all the events, are available from the Sun Inn, Calbourne, and the Orchards. The committee also has a stand at the weekly car boot sale in Calbourne where tickets can also be bought.
