AN ELDERLY woman has died after collapsing near an Isle of Wight school this morning (Tuesday).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was called to the scene, near St Mary's Primary School in Ampthill Road, Ryde at around 9.45am.

Police were also called to the scene.

It is believed the woman suffered a head injury after collapsing following a medical episode.

*A witness described seeing parents on their way to a school nativity, who had discovered the woman, trying to resuscitate her at the scene. It is understood that both had medical training.

Children were evacuated from the school playground to allow the air ambulance to land.

At around 3.50pm, a police spokeswoman said the 71-year-old woman had died.

"A file is being prepared for HM Coroner. The death is not being treated as suspicious," the spokeswoman said.
