BUDDING athletes from primary schools in the borough took part in pre-trials for the chance to represent Richmond upon Thames at the Mini Youth Games later in this year.

The Mini Youth Games will be held in central London in July.

Primary schools wishing to compete for this prestigious event turned up at Grey Court Secondary School last Friday and took part in the pre-trial event, the Primary School's Athletics Tournament.

The athletics tournament which was organised by the Sports Development Team at the Council was aimed at pupils in years 5 and 6.

Sixteen schools from across the borough registered to participate in a series of field and track events throughout the day.

The winning school was Sacred Heart RC, Teddington, which had the highest number of points, 294, at the end of the day.

Sacred Heart will go on to represent Richmond upon Thames in the Mini Youth Games in central London on July 4th, this year.

Cllr Bill Treble, executive member for voluntary organisations and leisure, said: "This is the first year that the Sports Development Team have organised a pre-trial so that schools can compete against one another to win a place at the Mini Youth Games.

"It is a great opportunity for young people to have fun and possibly end up competing on a national level."
