Bestival: Thursday traffic and travel info

BESTIVAL kicks off today and tens of thousands of people are expected to make their way to the Isle of Wight.

@EdConder has reported via Twitter that there are queues of up to 3 hours for the Red Jet in Southampton and said some vessels have left with empty seats on them. Red Funnel has said it is running a shuttle service currently.
A minor shunt on the Robin Hill roundabout earlier this evening has been cleared according to the Isle of Wight Council.

Slow moving traffic in both directions in Wootton according to the Isle of Wight Council. Spotters on scene said delays caused by normal commuter traffic.

Queues for the Fastcat in Portsmouth have eased to 15 minutes now, according to Wightlink.

Delays around the red Bestival car park have been cleared by marshalls according to the Isle of Wight Council.

"Traffic is expected to build as residents start to travel home from work, they are advised to avoid designated Bestival traffic routes and roads around the site if possible," said a spokesman.

The Isle of Wight Council has said there is a build up of traffic from the Robin Hill roundabout to the Bestival red car park entrance. "Marshals are working to get the traffic moving, expected to clear soon. If you do not need to travel to the site, please avoid the area," said a spokesman.

More than 5,000 cars are already on the Bestival site.

There have been reports of long queues for shuttle buses in Ryde.

The Isle of Wight Council has lifted parking restrictions around Appley Park and the Canoe Lake, Ryde, this afternoon. They were put in place as part of contingency plans in case of problems with Bestival parking/traffic today.

Tomorrow (Friday) the restrictions will be put back in place from 8am — the situation will be reviewed throughout the day and if the additional parking isn't required (like today) they should be lifted early afternoon, said the council.

Queues for the Wightlink Fastcat service in Portsmouth are estimated to be about 1hr 30mins long. Traffic for the car ferry service is flowing freely.

Earlier shuttle bus issues at Yarmouth, where there was a report of delays, have been resolved. There are delays of around 15 minutes on the Yarmouth/Lymington crossing.

Traffic has eased around Robin Hill, but non-Bestival traffic is still being advised to avoid the area, by the Isle of Wight Council.

Fairlee Road has been cleared following the earlier car fire according to the Isle of Wight Council.

The car fire in Fairlee Road was extinguished shortly before 10:50am, according to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

Drivers have been urged to avoid Fairlee Road, due to long delays caused by car fire, near cemetery. Fire was reported to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service at 10:19am and the car was said to be well alight.

Southern Vectis has reported that a car fire on Fairlee Road near the cemetery has caused heavy delays for its Route 5 and 9 sevices. Emergency services on scene.

The Isle of Wight Council reported main roads were running as normal, shortly after 10am. @MattandCat said via Twitter that traffic was slow moving near the Newclose cricket ground at 10am, while heavy traffic was reported between Ryde and Newport this morning, according to @EcoIslandteam, also on Twitter.

Queues of 90 minutes have been reported at Southampton for the Red Jet.

Due to an engine problem Red Jet 4 has been withdrawn from service this morning, leading to slight delays according to Red Funnel. The vessel is expected to be back in service by lunchtime.

Bestival traffic that has travelled via Red Funnel has been advised to use the Red Gate at the Bestival site by Hampshire Police Roads Policing Unit. "It's faster."

Everything said to be running smoothly at East Cowes, by Southern Vectis passenger. "There are coaches waiting to pick people up and no tailbacks."

Bestival campsites are due to open at 9am. The Isle of Wight council has advised drivers already parked in the car parks to stay with their vehicle until the campsites are open. The council urged people NOT to walk along the Downs Road.

Southern Vectis shuttle buses are now operating from Newport bus station to the site. They will run every ten until minutes 7pm, followed by an hourly service until 11pm tonight. On Friday and Saturday they will run every ten minutes from 8am to 7pm, then hourly until midnight. On Monday they will operate every 10 minutes between 7am and 1pm.

Southern Vectis buses will also continue to operate normal Island routes, with the Number 8 and Number 33 additionally entering the Bestival site to drop off / pick up at the Bestival Shuttle Bus Station.

The Isle of Wight Council has reported some congestion on the Downs Road. All other roads said to be running as normal.

Shuttle buses operated by the Big Green Coach company have started running from Wightlink, Red Funnel and Hovertravel, direct to the Bestival. They will run until 11pm tonight, except in Yarmouth, where the service will end at 4pm. There is no service from Fishbourne.
It is due to resume the same locations from 6am tomorrow (Friday), but will not operate on Saturday. Further details here.
