Brading plans approved

THE CONTROVERSIAL transformation of the closed Brading Experience tourist attraction was agreed by the Isle of Wight Council tonight (Tuesday).

The long-running planning saga came before the council’s planning committee after generating 226 letters of objection and opposition from Brading Town Council, the Council for the Protection of Rural England and Brading Residents’ Action Group.

The town council withdrew its objections following a meeting last night, after taking the view its concerns had been addressed by developer.

The owner of the former High Street waxworks attraction was tonight given permission to convert it to an antiques and craft centre, shop and cafe with three flats on the first floor.

A total of nine houses will be built and auction rooms retained in the World of Wheels building.

Objections centred on poor access, loss of a commercial site to residential use and lack of parking, especially serving the auction rooms.

Access to this development is only through the narrow single track of Quay Lane, which is already overconjested by normal and now extra traffic frequenting the well established, regular auction events. Nine houses and three flats will only add to this areas headache. This lane hasn`t and cannot be improved, or been updated or made safer since the days of horse and carts ! Did the council`s committee have blinkers on or did they just not bother to read or listen to the large volume of concerns and objections that were presented or have they just not heard of democracy ?
