FIREFIGHTERS were called to a caravan fire at Harts Farm, Rew Street, in Gurnard this morning (Sunday).

A crew from Newport and a water carrier from Freshwater responded to the incident.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene at 8.48am and were dampening down the area by 9.37am.

*A spokesman for the fire service said the fire was caused by a malfunction with an electric water heater.

Fire crews had to peel away layers of the caravan to douse hot spots with water.

The spokesman said the caravan was very badly damaged and would not be usable.
