THE first of the Isle of Wight's main carnivals will take place tonight (Saturday) in Newport.

The procession will assemble at Matalan car park at 6pm and move off at around 7.30pm on a route that will include Upper St James Street, Trafalgar Road, Carisbrooke Road and the High Street.

This year's procession is due to be led by the Vectis Corps of Drums and there will be awards for the best carnival queens, floats, other tableaux, school groups, families and individuals.

A programme of events is available from Newport shops Toys and Models, Island Treats, Dragonfly, Forget-Me-Not and True Wight Newsagents. The programme contains a full carnival itinerary as well as a fun colouring competition.
