A REVISED scheme to knock down a landmark pub at Cowes and replace it with shops and housing has been given the green light by Isle of Wight Council planners.
Minor alterations to the project, which has already been passed, were agreed by the Isle of Wight Council planning committee on Thursday, last week, despite concerns raised by some members about the loss of the only public drinking area in the town which had views across The Solent.
The original project to knock down the pub and build shops was given the go-ahead, following a determination by planning inspectors.
Revisions to the scheme originally agreed included different internal layouts of both flats and a revised 'sky-lounge’, which will be built on top of the flats.
Townhouses at the rear of the development would have minor changes to their window positions.
Cllr Arthur Taylor told members of committee the Waterside pub was the only place in Cowes where members of the public could have a drink and have views across Cowes and the Medina Estuary.
He said: "I always consider it a matter of regret when a pub closes. I suspect if we did refuse it, the inspector would probably approve it. It is very sad."
Cllr John Hobart added: "It is a shame there is nothing we can do about it."
