Cheaper imports hit furniture business

A FURNITURE shop in Newport is to close its doors permanently after 20 years of trading.

Classic Furniture, in the High Street, which has a factory in Cowes, has been hit by the recession and unable to compete with cheaper imports.

David Cox, one of the directors, said: "I started 20 years ago with a friend, Stuart Simmons.

"We also supplied nine outlets on the mainland but four of those closed down about a year ago and the others were selling less. We struggled on trying to keep it going but there comes a point where we have done all we can."

At its peak, the company had 15 staff. The remaining team of three will lose their jobs.

Mr Cox added: "We would like to thank all our many customers, who have been loyal to us over the past years.

"We would also like to thank our staff for their loyalty and hard work, especially Paul Collins, who has been with us since we opened."

Meanwhile administrators for national photographic chain Jessops, which has a store in St James Street, have confirmed they are to close all 187 shops.

Re your comment Mike;I understand It will always be cheaper to have things made abroad the point is the social price worth paying? For example HP sauce factory closed moved to Poland,Cadbury Milk tray moved abroad factory shut and the recent Transit Factory shut with production moved to Turkey. These are three examples i could give many and they all result in mass unemployment and lost 'proper' jobs in factories sometimes where literally generations worked in. A few part time jobs at ASDA isnt going to stop the population facing mass unemployment if the government doesnt stop cheap imports. It needs to be if you want to buy a product it should be made here and the price is the best price it can be made for here otherwise you cannot buy it! I know i am rambling on but if something is not done our children have no future. Nothing will change unless imports are controlled.America did which is why they still have a steel industry and we dont!

I don't know if it comes down to cheap imports as people will always want luxury goods - it's just a bad time to have a company which trades them due to the current climate. Why would I buy a chest of drawers for £300 if I could simply buy a half-decent one from Argos for £100. Unless it's a commodity that is an everyday essential or form of entertainment, people are just generally hard-up on splashing out on Luxury items. Sad, but true. I wish all the staff there the best in searching for new jobs, same with the Jessops staff.

Lee Majors, although I agree with you, I'm always baffled by people that will drive out to Tesco from Newport to save a few pence a litre. Probably waste more money on the petrol to do the round trip!

David I had a very long contract to assemble 3000 rather complicated and certainly labour intensive printed circuit boards. Another part of the finished item was completed in the Far East because, ............. the final assembled unit was CHEAPER than my customer could buy the component bits for, let alone assemble and test. That was in the very early 1980's ................... 30 years ago

Bargains are great but look at the big picture. Buying cheap imports mean British workers cannot compete with foreign workers paid £1 a day. If we dont do something about it no one will have a job and the next step from that is anarchy as those without, take from those with. For gods sake even a Prisoner officers job isnt safe these days and who would have believed that? The government must wake up and realise this country is in meltdown and if we dont stop imports we are doomed!

Some years ago we needed a sideboard to fit a specific wall. After months of fruitless searching we popped in to Classic Furniture. Chose the design we liked and they made it to order. It wasn't cheap but it's a quality piece of workmanship that will almost certainly see me out, and thus excellent value. They will be a sad loss

Lee I agree with you. I do a lot of photography and bought something from Jessops. When looking on line for something later still in the photo line, I saw what I had bought before at half the price I had paid at Jessops. Never went in the store again.
