LITTERBUGS in Lewisham will face hefty fines if they so much as flick a cigarette butt into the street in future.
As part of a crackdown on litterbugs, Lewisham Council launched a new initiative which will see teams patrolling the borough's streets over the busy Christmas period.
Litter officers will hand out leaflets to shoppers and bus passengers warning them they face a £25 fine if they are seen dropping any litter by the patrols.
More than 400 fines have been handed out since the campaign started last year and 20 people have been prosecuted by the council.
Councillor and deputy for the environment Paul Morris said: “Clean streets and a pleasant environment is what we all want. But this can be wrecked by the selfish few.”
