HARINGEY Council leader Toby Harris has told fellow Labour councillors that their job is to make sure all residents get a good deal from the town hall.

His statement came on Sunday at a meeting of all 54 Labour group members, who make up more than 90 per cent of all elected councillors.

Cllr Harris said: The new labour council will serve all Haringey residents. Labour councillors represent every part of the borough and Labour obtained 53 per cent of the vote in the local elections.

We will be working in the interests of every area: Tottenham, Hornsey, Wood Green from Archway to Northumberland Park and from Fortis Green to Seven Sisters.

Our task is to deliver best value services to all residents men and women, black and white, young and old, rich and poor. We will be a peoples council working in the interests of all the people.

Liberal Democrat councillor Lynne Featherstone branded Cllr Harris smug over the issue of Haringeys low election turnout.

She said: Mr Harris said it was due to their high degree of satisfaction with council services. If he thinks a low turnout means his Labour council is doing such a good job he should look at the turnout in Muswell Hill.

Here, local people knew Labour could be beaten, so they turned out to vote Lib Dem in their thousands.

Cllr Featherstone was this week appointed leader of Haringeys new three-strong Lib Dem group, with

Cllr June Andersen named second in command.
