THE Isle of Wight Film Festival will return this year as part of the Ventnor Fringe.
Screenings will be held at Ventnor Youth Centre, Victoria Street, where there will also be a series of educational events for those wanting to get into the film industry or simply have an interest in film making.
In recent years the film festival organisers had integrated the event with the Minghella Film Festival, but due to changes to that event, they have now teamed up with Ventnor Fringe.
A short film competition will include prizes for the Best Human Rights, Best Environmental, Best Drama and Best Isle of Wight short films.
Prizes will include thousands of pounds of film stock and Island-made prizes.
There will also be screenings of European feature films with an emphasis on youth and the arts.
Film festival organiser Bruce Webb said: "I have been to quite a few film festivals in Europe in the last couple of years and there are a lot of films that never get distributed in the UK and we thought it would be nice to bring them to a different audience.
"These are films that you would never normally get to see in British cinema."
Among the films to be shown will be Vegas, a Norwegian production that has never had a UK release and Breathing, an Austrian film, described by Variety as a perfectly formed slice of stylised social realism.
Bruce Webb, creator of the Isle of Wight Film festival, said: "When the event was held at Cineworld we were competing for audiences against films like The King’s Speech, but we will miss working with Cineworld, especially the quality of their projection and seating.
"The challenge for us now will be creating a cinema in different surroundings, but once the lights go down the films will transport the audience."
He added: "I love the concept of the fringe festival. Anyone can come along and be involved and the audiences are so mixed and eclectic, it covers all ranges."
Fringe director, Jack Whitewood, said: "Having the Isle of Wight Film Festival on board is incredibly exciting, and will really improve the film offering at the Fringe."
