A FLOATING log sparked a rescue alert for a lifeboat crew on Saturday.

Cowes RNLI lifeboat was launched on after what was thought to be a windsurf board was spotted in the water near Trinity Landing, off Cowes Parade.

When the lifeboat went to investigate they found it was a floating log. As it could be a hazard to craft, the lifeboat, helmed by Max Rimington, towed the log to Shepards Wharf Marina, said a spokesman.

Winter storms have led to a number of sightings of logs in the Solent and the River Medina in recent weeks.

Yesterday (Sunday) alone, Solent Coastguard received reports of several logs in the Solent area, according to Cowes RNLI.

In addition, four empty metal beer barrels were recently reported to have been thrown by youths into the harbour from the Island Sailing Club's premises.

Both the club and a Cowes Harbour launch were involved in efforts to retrieve them.
