A FLOOD Alert has been issued for an area of the Isle of Wight.
The Environment Agency issued the alert for Alverstone and Langbridge at 11.20am today (Friday).
It said: "10mm of rain has fallen over the Eastern Yar catchment in the last 12 hrs which has caused the river level to rise to a level where flooding is possible in the upper reaches of the river at Alverstone and Langbridge.
"The responsive nature of the river is a result of the 70mm of rain which fell between the previous weekend and consistent rain falling throughout this week. With a potential further 20-40mm of rain forecast this evening, the current river level is expected to remain high."

This corresponds with the size of the catchment areas, The Medina is the mid sized area and the Western Yar the smallest and tamest due to its formerly large catchment area being eroded by the sea in the past.I cant help thinking that a relief channel dug from Morton bridge down past the sewage works and out through "say" a pipe at Sandown would be worthy of attention in the future. Just for the worse of the flooding.I don't mean ruining nature reserves I am sure it could be done without that. The problem is that each time it floods more silt is deposited in the catchment, leading to less absorption capacity for flood water, a vicious circle. An opt out channel could help in times of the worst silt deposition occurrence, namely "rainy period".2000 years or so of agriculture, land clearance and development have silted up the East Yar tremendously.
