BUSINESS
ISLE of Wight self-catering businesses were among the first to meet the Isle of Wight’s new tourism boss at their annual meeting.
Chief executive of Visit Isle of Wight, David Thornton, met members of the Isle of Wight Self-Catering Association.
He said: "We need to focus on the troughs and not the peak periods of business. We must reconnect with and inspire our audience.
"Our number one asset is the landscape. A number of television programmes have already recognised this. We must build on that relationship, our status as an area of outstanding natural beauty and Ecoisland."
Retiring chairman John Allen said business was holding up well, especially compared with Devon and Cornwall.
David Ballard was elected the new chairman.

our only asset is our landscape...but we have to stop talking about minority travellers who will put pennies in the coffers and start getting the families back...only they can save tourism on this island and for that we must develop our beaches....The Islands days of doing nothing are over....we need pleasure parks, beaches and all year facilities up to the standard of the mainland..then the ferry price won't be so offensive
