Former Isle of Wight councillor dies

Former Isle of Wight councillor David Knowles.

FORMER Ryde mayor and Isle of Wight councillor, David Knowles, has died.

Cllr Knowles, of Marlborough Road, is a former town mayor and deputy mayor and was first elected to the Isle of Wight Council in 1999.

During his time on the council he sat on various committees and was a member of the Lib Dem-led executive between 2001 and 2005.

A long-time supporter of Ryde’s Esplanade skate park and leading campaigner on local issues including the Pennyfeathers development, he held various positions over the years including portfolio holder for public protection, fire and emergency planning and consumer protection.

He also served as the Isle of Wight member on the Police Authority.

I never met David in person, and sadly it's now to late to do so in person, but I just wanted to say thank you for the skate park. Gave us something to do and we felt listened to by the "grownups" (for some of us, sadly, this was a very rare thing even within their own families). We really appreciated your tireless work. Thoughts are with your family. A true asset to the Island. Hope you are at peace. Blessings, Ambs (now in my 30s, but still boarding & extreme-sporting under the misapprehension of invincibility that is proved wrong on a weekly - if not daily - basis these days)

RIP Dave, a really nice man who was a great Councillor and always there to help with any local issues. SEAGAP valued the help and support he unstintingly gave. He will be sadly missed.

R.I.P. Dave. We had our differences but you will be much missed by your former colleagues of all political parties.
