A HOAX call and someone smoking in a restaurant led to call outs branded a waste of resources by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service last night.
Three fire engines rushed to Sandown Social Club, at York Road, at 11.15pm, following a hoax call reporting a fire inside the building.
There was no fire, and the call was later traced to a public phone box across the road.
In a separate incident another engine was sent to Hong Kong Express, Ryde Esplanade, when a fire alarm was triggered by someone smoking inside.
"It was a waste of resources," said a spokesman for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
