PLANS to convert Ventnor Winter Garden into a hotel and restaurant, by a group that includes Michelin-starred chef Robert Thompson, have been approved today (Tuesday).

The plans include two and three-storey extensions to the side of the Winter Gardens that will create 37 bedrooms. There will also be conference facilities and a restaurant.

A stability report previously submitted by engineers concluded that the majority of the existing building could be saved, however the bar and foyer would need rebuilding, due to ground movement.

The plans were approved subject to a series of conditions, including the need for an approved drainage scheme.

Developers, The Hambrough Group, must also seek council approval on materials, external lighting and a traffic management
