Wingate & Finchley 3

Wingate & Finchley, a predominantly Jewish club, are to complain to the Ryman League about racist jibes allegedly made during this Third Division match on Saturday.

Said press officer Harvey Ackerman: "We were leading 2-0 and seemingly coasting to victory when they tried to unnerve us with racist taunts. The game overheated and we lost our rhythm. The friction overspilled into the dressing rooms after the match, when some of our players made their feelings known."

Wingate looked set to end a disappointing campaign when they led 2-0 after 29 minutes. They went ahead after 11 minutes when Russell Brill seized possession and crossed a short ball to Adam Hart, who flicked it on for Craig Pearl to score.

Danny Schindler stretched the lead with a powerful header after Danny Piler collected Adam Hart's return pass and whipped in a cross.

But, with seven minutes left, Southall salvaged a point with two goals in 90 seconds, through Alan Galloway and Danny Yeoman, as Wingate crumbled.

. The Blues finished 18th out of 20 in the Ryman League (Division Three) after an uninspiring second half to the season. In the two previous campaigns they had ended mid-table.

WINGATE & FINCHLEY: Bolle, Brill, Piler, Portman, Rayner (Silver 52), Greenstreet, Pearl, Silkman, Hart, Myers, Schindler. Subs: Bookman.
