THE inquest into the death of an Isle of Wight couple, who died when their car went over Culver Cliff, reopened this morning (Thursday).

Paul James Charles, 53, of Albert Road, Sandown, and his wife, Jacqueline, 48, of Union Road, Ryde, were killed when their blue Renault Scenic plunged 300ft on to rocks below Culver Cliff on August 17 last year.

Rescue workers recovered one body from inside the upturned car and the other was found nearby.

The vehicle was believed to have been driven out of the top car park, near Culver Haven Inn, across the road and over a ditch, before crashing through a wire fence and over the cliff edge.

The wreckage of the car had to be winched from the rocks by a Chinook helicopter.

The inquest opening, held on August 19 last year, heard the pair died of multiple injuries consistent with a fall.

The inquest is expected to last until tomorrow (Friday).
