MEDINA HIGH School topped a league of Isle of Wight schools sending pupils to the leading universities.
According to new Department for Education figures the proportion of Island pupils in further or higher education was broadly in line with the national average in 2009/10.
For the first time the DfE has published data for schools showing how many students progressed to further or higher education or training for each state school, college and local authority in the country.
The Island sent six per cent of its pupils to one of the Russell Group of leading universities, excluding Oxford and Cambridge, compared to eight per cent nationally.
At 16 per cent, Medina High School — Medina College — sent the most students to the country’s top universities from Island schools.
In the year after taking an A level or equivalent at Key Stage 5 in 2009/10, 61 per cent of young people on the Island were in sustained education with 47 per cent at a higher education institution, compared to national figures of 64 per cent and 52 per cent respectively.
Nationally, Portsmouth had the lowest percentage of young people recorded as being in sustained education, at 48 per cent, while Harrow had the highest at 79 per cent.
In the year after GCSE (KS4), 86 per cent of Island young people were in sustained education, compared to 85 per cent nationally.
On the Island, 45 per cent of students were at school sixth forms compared to 36 per cent nationally.
