Island Race for Life back on

By Martin Neville - Friday, February 5, 2010
RACE for Life will be returning to the Island this summer after all.
Cancer Research UK announced this afternoon (Friday) that the date and venue for the 5k women-only event are currently being confirmed and will be available by early next week.
A strong swell of local support, coupled with the difficulty in travelling to an alternative Race for Life on the mainland, led the charity to reconsider its controversial decision to cancel the Island event.
Louise Keep, senior national event manager, said: "Cancer Research UK took the difficult decision to cancel a number of smaller events across the UK, including the Isle of Wight, where the number of participants had been dropping.
"This is because Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life series raises money to fund life-saving research and we owe it to our participants and supporters to ensure that we raise as much money as possible in the most cost-efficient way.
"However, we have reviewed our decision and are delighted to be able to hold Race for Life on the Isle of Wight again. These are exceptional circumstances in which the strong swell of local support, coupled with the difficulty in travelling to an alternative Race for Life on the mainland, mean that we have decided to bring the event back for 2010."
Anyone who has already registered for alternative events on the mainland and wants to transfer back to the Isle of Wight Race for Life will be able to do so without paying another registration fee.
