Islanders urged to have their say on asphalt plant

CAMPAIGNERS opposed to plans for an asphalt plant have urged people to have their say during an Isle of Wight Council consultation period for the application.

Julia Hill, spokeswoman for Wight Residents against Asphalt Plant (WRAP), which is opposed to plans for an asphalt plant on the River Medina, said: "It is important that people use the opportunity that has been given.

"People have three weeks starting today (Friday) and they can comment on the new information about the proposed plant supplied by the company and the older information contained within the original application too.

"We have concerns that the new information has annexed pages missing and we have raised that with the Isle of Wight Council."

The additional information was requested by the Isle of Wight Council after it said not enough detail was provided in the original application submitted by Eurovia Roadtsone.

If given permission the plant will produce materials for the Vinci Concessions, the company which won the multi-million pound roads Private Finance Initiative 25 year contract from the Isle of Wight Council.

Opponents say the proposed site on the bank of the River Medina, accessed off Arctic Road, is too close to homes and the Isle of Wight should have only one plant — an upgraded Bardon Vectis plant at Shide, for which that company has also submitted a planning application.

Eurovia Roadstone has said the Medina plant would be a modern, low-emission facility.

Perhaps protest campaigners should not expect too much success at winning their cause, as the newly planned ashpalt plant is virtually a dead cert to be built ! Why ? Take a look at the massive campaign launched by BRAG, (Brading Residents Action Group), over the last few years to prevent the old Wax Museum being redeveloped, in an unsuitable way for Brading. At the last hurdle, all points and concerns raised at all types of meetings by hundreds of local folk were ignored, and the developer had their way, more or less, as the original proposal. Have your say ? Yes, but don`t expect more beyond that !

well said lee, i mentioned something similar when this first came to light, it is a great idea so wont be implemented, as you say we dont like change, good or bad

I think with something new that is planned for the island, and I am being serious here, the people who put in a planning application for something like this, or wind turbines, or any high profile change to our landscape etc, should pay for a coach and hotel and take nearby island residents and/or concerned islanders to a plant which is near identical on the mainland so they can have first hand experience of what it will be like to live around, as us islanders do not like change, but sometimes change is good.

Its not like a nuclear power station or a steel making blast furnace, its just a plant to make proper black top for our roads, instead of that spray on rubbish that has caused trouble and delay on Island roads all summer.
