TWO more siblings are hoping for success in the Promotasport Raceway International Group A Hot Rods this season.

The News Shopper reported on the efforts of Nichola and Terry Bearman on March 4 but there is another family team going for glory.

Darren and Gary Christie from Eltham have been racing the modified saloon cars for four years and have earned their place among the best drivers at their Arena Essex track.

Group A Hot Rods are designed for oval quarter-mile circuits. Despite high speeds and a field of 25 to 30 cars, the races are strictly non-contact. Darren, 28, and Gary, 27, drive for the Christie Racing Team which is managed by father Peter. "This championship has evaded us in the past but I am confident of success this year," he said.

The team had a mixed start at Arena Essex on Sunday. Gary set the fastest time in practice but had to withdraw from the main race with engine problems. Darren, however, was second in his heat and went on to win the final. A seventh place in the all-comers race means he actually leads the Supreme Championship points standings after the first round. The next race is at Arena Essex on April 13.

The team has received support from Kenny Singleton of Kenny's Pop In, building restoration expert Richard Smith and Robin Domascio of Grovesbury SOM.
