The first County Championship cricket match at Southgate's Walker Ground for 139 years was badly affected by rain, causing Middlesex to forfeit their second innings in search of a win, after topping 400 in the first, and almost being beaten by Essex.
Mike Gatting (241) chalked up his 10th first-class double century in an opening stand of 372 with in-form Australian Justin Langer (166), and skipper Mark Ramprakash (43 no) declared at 488-2.
After Essex declared at 151-3, Middlesex forfeited their second innings, leaving the visitors to score 338 for victory. Ronnie Irani (104) took Essex close, but they ended 23 runs short at 315-9.
