OVER 400 Isle of Wight homes were left without electricity in the early hours of this morning (Friday), possibly because of lightning damage, according to a power company.

Approximately 404 houses in Wroxall, Blackwater, Rookley and Merstone were affected.

As of 10am this morning, 20 homes were still waiting for electrical power to be restored.

A spokesman for Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution said: "By re-routing power through unaffected parts, engineers have been able to restore supplies throughout the morning. The majority of customers had power back by 6am."

A further 50 homes had their supply restored at 8am.

The spokesman said teams were working to repair equipment and reconnect the final 20 customers.

"We believe the cause of the fault was lightning damage, be would like to apologise for the inconvenience and thank customers their patience," he said.
