Runners take part in Race for Life 2011 on the Isle of Wight.
CANCER, we are coming to get you — that is the rallying cry for Race for Life 2013 on the Isle of Wight.
Registration for the Cancer Research UK fundraiser opens tomorrow (Tuesday), and Isle of Wight women are being urged to take a stand against cancer by signing up and raising money for vital research.
Regional event manager Elizabeth Frisby said: "Come on ladies, please play your part by entering Race for Life. Together, we can hit cancer where it hurts. There are more than 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all.
"It’s fighting talk, and we mean every word we say. Cancer, the Isle of Wight is coming to get you."
Following the cancellation of last year's Race for Life, organisers are determined to make this year's event the best ever. It has been moved forward, ahead of the Isle of Wight Festival, and will be held at the Medina Leisure Centre on Sunday, May 19.
Organisers hope to raise £50,000 this year, and are appealing for 1,200 women to take part.
"Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5km in an hour while chatting and having fun.
"Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer," said Elizabeth.
"It's an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress but what’s inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer.
"Don’t be fooled by the tutus and tiaras. Isle of Wight Race for Life is cancer’s worst nightmare.
"We are very grateful to everyone who signed up last year and in the past, and hope this year will bring everyone back to complete last year's cancelled event. Thanks to them, Cancer Research UK has been able to make progress against many forms of the disease.
"But the battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need everyone to return to the fight in 2013 and bring new recruits with them."
