A MAIN road out of Cowes is to be closed for seven weeks so sewerage pipes can be laid to the new Aldi supermarket, being constructed beside BAE Systems.
The closure, which will start in the next couple of weeks, will mean no through traffic will be permitted on the road from Northwood Garage to the Somerton roundabout and to the reservoir on Newport Road, although access will be permitted to homes and businesses.
Signs were erected by the contractors working on the site last weekend but these were removed by the Isle of Wight Council.
Peter Hayward, council manager for highways and transport, said: "While we have agreed the principle of such a closure, the details have yet to be confirmed and therefore the signs, which were put up prematurely, have been taken down.
"Once the details have been finalised, the closure will be advertised," said Mr Hayward. He expected the work to start in the week beginning September 24.
