TWO MEN had a lucky escape when the lorry they were travelling in caught fire last night (Friday).

Firefighters were called out to extinguish the blaze in Luccombe Road, near Shanklin, at around 7.45pm.

It is believed the white Ford low loader caught fire as it was being driven up the hill towards Luccombe, on the outskirts of Shanklin.

The driver and his passenger had to exit the vehicle quickly before it was engulfed in flames.

A crew from Ventnor attended the fire. The lorry was completely destroyed.

There were no injuries.

The fire blocked the road to traffic for some time, say the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

The incident was closed at 8.41pm.
