MP's Christmas present for Toy Appeal

MP Andrew Turner has swapped cards for Isle of Wight Christmas Toy Appeal cash.

He and partner Carole Dennett have given the cash they would normally spend on sending Christmas cards to the Christmas Toy Appeal, which will use the money to fund Christmas presents for Island youngsters.

It came as time ticked away towards the Friday deadline.

"We really do appreciate this thoughtful gesture and donation from Andrew and Carole," said appeal co-founder and organiser Deborah Rooke.

"It gives the appeal some extra help just when we need it.

"We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from so many people — for example the Entertainer in Newport are opening-up especially for us on Thursday evening so that we can go along to buy toys with this and the other donations we have received.

"I am still hopeful that, with one last big push, we will hit our target."

Mr Turner said: "There are so many good causes on the Isle of Wight, nobody could support them all, but the idea of youngsters receiving no Christmas presents at all to open on Christmas Day is horrible, so we decided to give the appeal a bit of a boost.

"Daniel and Deborah Rooke have worked so hard and done a great job getting the appeal off the ground, supported by the fantastic Bestival team, our local media and so many other Island organisations.

"I am sure that family and friends on the Island, and elsewhere, will understand and support our decision — we still wish them and all Islanders a very happy Christmas! "

Sadly Mr Turners reputation for taking advantage of financial perks and maximising on his expenses is never going to sit well with the majority of us. I wish the appeal every success, quite a separate issue.

Thank you for your comments Lee and Sue. Andrew & Carole have supported the appeal before but this year we were worried about reaching our target so we asked for their help. Donating to the appeal rather than sending Christmas cards is a lovely idea but they do need to justify how they spent the money and why people won't be receiving cards from them this year. We have also had messages of support from Dame Ellen MacArthur, double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson, TV presenters Jenni Falconer, Richard Arnold and Chris Packham, newsreader Fred Dinenage and Bestival curator Rob da Bank. Every mention that we can get for the appeal helps to get us a little closer to our target. Fingers crossed we will get there. ~ Daniel Rooke, Appeal Organiser.

How horribly crass to make a big deal of giving to charity. People give all the time Andrew but guess what they don't shout about it.
