Police are warning women to be on their guard when leaving Tube stations after a violent robber struck seven times in the last 14 days.

Gold jewellery and handbags have been snatched and teeth broken after attacks near Golders Green, Hendon Central and Colindale Tube stations.

"We do not want to frighten people but we need to make people aware," said a spokesman for Colindale Police.

"If you are wearing any gold jewellery try to keep it covered up. If you feel as if you are being followed, then you should ring us immediately either on a mobile or go into a shop."

All the women attacked when they were on their own and usually while walking away from the station. The robber approaches them from behind, tells them not to scream and threatens them with a knife or bottle.

Most attacks happened either between 3.30pm and 5.30pm or 9.30pm and 11.30pm, but police are advising caution at all times.

"Police are concerned because the robbery is getting increasingly violent. He has broken a few teeth and on one occasion he produced a knife although he did not use it.

"We can assure the public we are following a number of leads."

Police believe the robber is a black man, 6ft tall with a slim build, short hair and aged between 20 and 30.

He speaks with a soft voice and wears dark clothing.

If you can help the investigation, call Colindale Police's robbery squad on 0181 733 4543.
