New use for closed hotel?

The closed Hartland Hotel.

A WELL-known Island hotel could be converted into a holiday centre for families with autistic children.

A planning application has been submitted to convert the closed Hartland Hotel, in Shanklin, into a specialist holiday centre, incorporating owner’s accommodation and four units for holidaying families.

The 20-bed hotel, in Victoria Road, has remained closed for a year following repossession.

If planning permission is granted by the Isle of Wight Council, the centre will be used mainly for holidays by mainland families.

The proposals are backed by specialists, including Dr Viv Hinchcliffe the head of centres for specialist needs in the London area.

The applicant says facilities, including the swimming pool, could also be used by local residents with special needs.

I hope the holidays are open to Island families as well. Having an autistic child can make travelling long distances something of a 'no go' and the thought of being able to go somewhere on the Island where I know my child is safe and welcomed would at least stop us looking at the same four walls for a few days!

What a fantastic idea. I hope this all comes together for them but I for one hold a vote of no confidence in the Isle of Wight’s planning department and wouldn’t hold your breath on a positive approval if their past history is any thing to go by. Unlike most mainlands planning departments the Isle of Wight’s version is to be less than desired. I do wish them all the luck though as I feel they’re going to need it.

What a lovely idea, I hope this sort of thing catches on. Most nice hotels that close these days get knocked down and converted into blocks of flats...
