ATHLETICS.

Triplets Susan, Liz and Helen Williams from Walton Athletic Club gained a quintet of medals in the Surrey Championships staged in gloriously sunny weather at Kingsmeadow Stadium at the weekend.

Best of the trio, Susan, struck gold twice as she took the 100 and 200 metres in 12.2 sec and 24.3 sec.

She comfortably took the 100 metres ahead of sister Helen (12.4 sec) and Hercules Wimbledon's Janette Niccolls (12.7 sec).

The 200 metres proved a much tougher contest as Croydon's Michelle Pierre, ranked fifth in the UK over 400 metres last summer, led round the bend.

But, Sue got the measure of her rival in the home straight to win by four metres with Helen taking the bronze in 25 sec.

Liz completed a hat-trick of wins for the Williams family by taking the 400 metres in 56.1 sec from former Tamworth Manor youngster Jeina Mitchell (56.1 sec).

The four Bennett sisters from Epsom and Ewell Harriers had their anticipated exhausting weekend, competing in 11 different events between them. They managed to lift five titles between them as well as a clutch of minor medals.

Diana took the 100 metres hurdles in 14.7 sec, and high jumped 1.70 metres for the silver medal behind Julia who cleared a fine winning 1.83 metres.

Christina won the shot with 14.65 metres while the youngest of the quartet, Joanna, came away with two titles in the under 17 shot (10.51 metres) and hammer (22.59 metres).

She also took silver in the discus (27.04 metres).

Christina also won two silvers in the senior discus (37.61 metres) and hammer (46.66 metres).

Julia was also second in the long jump on 6.03 metres behind her Epsom clubmate Liz Ghojefa (6.16 metres) and third in the shot (12.07 metres).

So the Bennett family medal haul across the two-day meeting was 10 - five golds, four silvers and one bronze!
