Plane crash report 'false alarm'

By a County Press reporter

Saturday, May 12, 2012

REPORTS that a light aircraft had crashed into the sea off The Needles near to the Isle of Wight have now been dismissed as a false alarm.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman told the County Press a person had reported seeing the aircraft ditch in the sea at lunchtime in good faith.

The Coastguard helicopter and other emergency services were sent to the scene initially.

However, the agency had tracked the aircraft to Alderney where it had landed safely.

It is believed the person confused a white fishing boat on the horizon with the aircraft in the bright, sunny conditions.

All searches have been called off.
