Plans to demolish church on hold

Holy Cross Church, Seaview, which could be demolished.

A CHURCH earmarked for demolition by the Catholic church has been given a stay of execution by Isle of Wight councillors.
The Portsmouth Diocese has lodged plans to tear down Holy Cross Catholic Church, Seafield Road, Seaview and replace it with a detached home.
But councillors tonight (Tuesday) deferred their decision in order to seek further information about community use at the church.
The plans had been recommended for approval, with conditions, by Isle of Wight Council officers, but there had been local opposition.
This was despite claims from the diocese last year that it was closing the church due to dwindling congregations.
