FOUR people from the Isle of Wight were rescued when their speedboat broke down in the Solent.
The 16ft boat had engine failure about one mile north east of Ryde Pier on Saturday.
The four men, returning to Ryde Harbour from a trip to Portsmouth, were spotted waving for help by a passing yachtsman.
Their position was reported to Solent Coastguard by a passing hovercraft which led to the launch of a Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service lifeboat.
It reached the stricken speedboat within four minutes and towed it to Wootton Creek.
Its crew, who did not have safety equipment with them, were warned about the importance of carrying suitable safety equipment and the benefits of checking tidal and wind conditions prior to going afloat.
