Road works delayed by weather

A MAJOR programme to surface dress Isle of Wight roads has ground to a halt.

Wet weather has meant that although the mainland contractor carrying out the work had completed most of the tar and chippings surfacing work, it had to suspend the operation with an estimated two days’ still to do.

The Isle of Wight Council said the contractor was waiting for a weather window to complete the contract and confirmed it was fixed price and the delay would not mean extra cost to council tax payers.

Surface dressing ahead of next year’s highways Private Finance Initiative was needed to ensure roads were safe, said the council.

Rain is forecast across the Isle of Wight for the rest of the week.
