Roadworks for new pub roundabout

TRAFFIC disruption is likely in Lake, from Sunday until March next year, for construction of a new roundabout.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation on the A3056 Newport Road junction with Whitecross Lane.

The new roundabout will serve the redevelopment of Merrie Gardens Farm site for a Marston's pub and restaurant.

The works will run from Sunday, October 28 until mid-December and from early January to late March.

Whitecross Lane will be closed between Newport Road and Merrie Gardens, for most of this period, to try to minimise disruption.

The diversion route for access to Whitecross Lane will be the A3056 Newport Road, A3055 Sandown Road, Green Lane, Sandy Lane and Whitecross Lane.

The Isle of Wight Council advised traffic travelling between Newport and Sandown to follow the A3056 to Blackwater and Arreton, Downs Road to Brading and the A3055 to Sandown and traffic travelling between Newport and Shanklin should use the A3020 through Godshill, to Shanklin.

Damned annoying for those if us living in Merrie Gardens. Would be an idea if they could have some access through Spithead industrial estate for us, otherwise it's a **** long way to Morrisons! Plus I have got a ferry to catch in East Cowes tomorrow morning but hopefully we might still get through then.

So, who's paying for all this work? Marstons?? and is there anything in it for us locals who now have to use extra petrol & time to divert for the next 5 month's?

Hi Mike, might be your safest bet,don't forget Newport Road from Cowes is messed up as well if your're going that way! Let's see if they do their usual trick and **** up the diverted routes around the road works as well. Lake has'nt long been finished from last time they calved it up. At least I suppose there is one consolation, they're not doing while the grockells are still here!

Graham, I live on the Shanklin side of Lake and have to go to St Mary's Hospital on Tuesday. I feel that I should leave home on Monday morning and take the following route. Shanklin, Ventnor, Niton, Military Road, Freshwater, Yarmouth, Ferry to Lymington, up to Southampton where I stay overnight, then Red Funnel to East Cowes, Floating Bridge to Cowes and down to St Mary's from there.

Should I leave on Sunday do you think?

Only the Isle of Wight Council could arrange two lots of major road works in the same area at the same time. By the time this lot tails back traffic to join the works at Newport Road/Lake traffic lights works, the whole area will be gridlocked up Lake Hill and Sandown Road and back into Apse Heath. What a complete and utter balls up!

There are plenty of locations desperate for a roundabout: why this proposed pub?
