RUBBISH piling up on an Isle of Wight seafront has led to calls for more to be done to keep the beach clean.

Sandown resident Julia Catling said she and her partner regularly cleaned a rubbish strewn stretch of Sandown beach and also pointed to the problem of overflowing bins.

She said: "Over recent years, I have contacted the council and councillors on several occasions.

"The council has apparently refused to install more bins along the front or arrange appropriate collections, which fit with the tides and the increased number of holidaymakers in the peak season.

"Consequently, it is usual for the bins to be overflowing and the beach to be strewn with rubbish, including glass bottles and nappies. A lot of this ends up in the sea," she added.

Local Cllr Ian Ward said: "Some bins fill up within a few hours, while others, 50 metres down the road, are empty.

"We could look more carefully at what size of bins are placed where, with bigger bins in the busier areas."

Alex Minns, strategic manager for recreation, leisure and parks said: "We are pleased people use the litter bins on the beach and nearby but appreciate they fill up at the end of busy days in summer.

"Litter placed alongside the bins is collected when they are emptied, in the morning and late afternoon."

Mr Minns said beaches were cleaned daily during high season and urged people to take responsibility for their litter.

THis just fits in with the perception of the Island since this new be your own dustbin scheme .visitors think we are one big rubbish dump and have no compulsion about ditching their rubbish every where.
One of the reasons I and many people moved here years ago was because unlike London this Island was rubbish free becuse its focus was getting rid of rubbish not getting residents to sort it for them.

I thought that those wonderful people at Ecoisland were going to be doing all the beach cleans.
There must be a photo opportunity in it somewhere.
